What is a Linear Actuator?

What are its applications?

A linear actuator is a precision device that converts rotary motion into controlled linear push-pull movement, thereby transforming the rotational action of a standard motor into smooth, directional linear displacement.
Linear actuators are widely used across global industries, providing precise, reliable, and fully controllable motion for countless applications. They can be powered by electric, hydraulic, or pneumatic systems; among these, electric linear actuators have become the preferred choice for modern commercial and residential sectors due to their versatility, cleanliness, and ease of use.

Linear actuators are widely used across various sectors, industrial automation, medical and rehabilitation equipment, height-adjustable desks, solar tracking systems, robotics, and smart home furniture, and specialty vehicles. Their core value lies in converting electrical energy into stable, precise linear motion—enabling lifting, pushing/pulling, and angle adjustments—making them indispensable drive components for modern smart equipment.

Basic Operating Principle of Linear Actuators

Taking the most common electric linear actuator as an example:

First, upon receiving power, the motor begins to rotate. A reduction mechanism (typically a gearbox) lowers the rotational speed while increasing output torque. The reduced-speed power is then transmitted to a lead screw (or ball screw).
As the screw rotates continuously, it drives a nut to move linearly; based on the principles of screw transmission, the rotation of the screw causes the nut to advance or retract axially.
Finally, the actuator rod extends or retracts accordingly, thereby achieving linear motion.

In short:
Motor rotation → Gear reduction → Screw rotation → Linear actuator movement
Power is generated by the motor, and a screw or piston mechanism is then used to convert rotary motion or fluid pressure into controlled linear push-pull motion

How to Choose the Right Industrial Linear Actuator?

  • 1. Calculate Required Force Capacity
Start with the most critical specification. Always calculate the worst-case dynamic force, including static load weight, sliding friction, acceleration forces (F=ma), and geometric leverage effects. Apply a 1.5×–2× safety factor to account for peak conditions and unknown variables. Distinguish between:

  •   Dynamic load: Maximum force the actuator can push/pull while moving
Static load: Maximum force the actuator can hold when powered off

  • 2. Determine Stroke & Installation Dimensions
Stroke length is the total distance the actuator rod travels. Add 10–20mm of overtravel clearance to prevent mechanical damage. Most importantly, verify that the retracted length (hole-to-hole) fits within your available installation space. Standard stroke lengths (2", 4", 6", etc.) offer faster delivery and lower costs compared to custom options.

  • 3. Match Speed & Duty Cycle
  • There is an inverse relationship between speed and force for any given motor power. Always check the manufacturer's Speed vs. Load curve—an actuator rated for 2"/sec may only achieve 1"/sec at full load. Match the duty cycle to your usage pattern:
    10–20%: Intermittent use (furniture, hatches)
    25–50%: Moderate industrial use
    100%: Continuous operation (specialized models)

4. Evaluate Environmental Protection
Select the appropriate IP (Ingress Protection) rating based on your operating environment:
IP54: Indoor warehouse use (limited dust, splash-proof)
IP65: General outdoor applications (dust-tight, low-pressure water jets)
IP66: Washdown environments (high-pressure water jets)
IP67/IP68: Marine and submersion applications
Also consider temperature range, corrosion resistance (stainless steel options available), and noise level requirements.

  • 5. Select Control & Feedback System
Choose the control complexity that matches your positioning needs:

  • Basic control: Simple on/off operation via switches or relays for fully extended/retracted positions
Advanced control: Position feedback for intermediate stops, programmable motion profiles, or multi-actuator synchronization

Available feedback options include potentiometers (analog), Hall sensors (digital synchronization), and encoders (high-precision servo control). Select voltage: 12V DC (mobile/battery), 24V DC (industrial standard), or 110V/220V AC.

  • 6. Choose the Right Drive Technology
Drive technology is crucial for the operation of actuators, with different drive mechanisms suited to different applications.:
Lead Screw: Self-locking, cost-effective, low speed. Ideal for furniture, hatches, and basic lifting
Ball Screw: High efficiency, higher speed, longer lifespan. Requires brake for static load holding
Roller Screw: Maximum force density, extreme shock resistance. For heavy industrial and robotics applications
Telescopic: Long travel in a compact retracted length. Perfect for limited space installations

  • 7. Verify Mounting & Safety Features
The installation and safety of linear actuators are also of great importance when selecting a linear actuator. Ensure your mounting brackets are sufficiently stiff to prevent flexing under load. Actuators are not designed to handle side loads—always use external guide rails to support the load. Verify that essential safety features are included: internal limit switches, emergency stop compatibility, and optional brakes for non-self-locking designs.

Industrial Linear Actuator FAQs

1.What is the difference between JIECANG electric linear actuators and hydraulic actuators?

Our electric linear actuators are cleaner, more energy-efficient, and far easier to control and maintain compared to hydraulic systems. They eliminate the risk of fluid leaks, require no ongoing fluid maintenance, and offer precise digital control for smart system integration, making them the preferred choice for modern industrial, commercial, and residential applications.

2.How do I choose the right stroke length for my application?

Your required stroke length is determined by the total linear travel distance needed for your application. We recommend selecting a stroke that matches your required movement, with a small safety buffer to avoid over-travel. Our engineering team can help you calculate the perfect stroke length for your specific use case.

3.What IP rating do I need for my linear actuator?

For indoor dry environments (office furniture, indoor smart home), IP54 is typically sufficient. For outdoor use, wet environments (bathroom equipment), or industrial applications with dust and moisture exposure, we recommend IP65 or above. Our industrial range offers up to IP66M waterproof grade for the most demanding environments.

4.Can JIECANG industrial linear actuators be customized?

Absolutely. We offer full end-to-end customization for all our linear actuators, including stroke length, load capacity, speed, input voltage, IP rating, feedback options, mounting dimensions, and color. Our in-house R&D team works directly with you to create a tailored solution that meets your exact requirements.
